COVID-19 Cigar Walk, Day 65: 2.0-Mile Cigar
Brazilian Mata Fina, Drew Estate, Gran Toro, Maduro, Nicaragua, San Andrés Negro, Undercrown Well, my Cigar-Walk this morning started out fine and dandy while fully enjoying the first puffs of the Undercrown Gran Toro by Drew Estate… #Delicious!

Then… a wonky burn started to act up… after several touchups, I was finally able to get a decent burn at the last third. I know this is not normal for this cigar, but… it was only a 2-Mile cigar because of the burn issue that I suspect was caused by a stem running down the middle of the cigar… this Undercrown delivered short of my expectations today… #HandRolled

It’s a good thing I had another cigar that I brought along for moments just like this

I am really appreciating that my limited experience will allow me to totally relax and enjoy a cigar without taking notes during the smoking process/experience. With this Drew Estate Undercrown cigar, I can do it from memory.

Drew Estate, Maduro, Nicaragua, San Andres Negro, UndercrownToday’s epiphany begins with the Drew Estate’s branding statement “The Rebirth of Cigars”. This rings true for me because when I was last smoking cigars 20-years ago, I can’t remember a cigar or cigar brand that was anything like Drew Estate and the cigars that they create. It was toward the beginning of my reemergence back into the cigar hobby that one of my first “small batch” cigars was from Drew Estate.

Also, along the few short months that I’ve been back, I’ve developed a fondness for the darker Maduro type wrappers that this Drew Estate Undercrown processes; a rich dark Mexican San Andres wrapper welcomes me on top of a beautifully constructed Connecticut, Habano, Sun Grown binders and deep rich flavors of the Brazilian, Nicaraguan fillers.

On the pre-light cold draw; I was welcomed by the taste of sweet cocoa nibs through a perfect draw.

Once lit… there was smoke and lots of it. Rich chewy leather earthy smoke and I’m diggin’ it… all the way to the end.

Today isn’t the first time with the Drew Estate Undercrown Maduro nor will it be the last. I’ve had my hands on these for a few months and I almost forgot about them; I hadn’t smoked one of these for months. Time to get reacquainted.

There’s quite a backstory to this “famous” cigar that I’ll share at the end, but know that the blend of this cigar is of “Legendary” flavors and ligas that many of you already know about.

My punch-cut cold-draw and I the taste of sweet cocoa and black coffee invade my senses. Once lit the legendary smoke provides massive amounts of satisfaction and a smooth mouthfeel and taste of cocoa, leather, and earth. We’re rolling along fabulously at the first third. No pepper or spice to be found anywhere; a very smooth smoke.

So halfway through and the oily smoke continues to coat my tongue leaving lasting finishes to this dandy cigar.

At the last third there are bold flavors and yes this cigar ring true of its origins, its strength and body are hanging out in the medium range. This cigar belongs with me!

From Drew Estates Website: The Story of the Undercrown

Drew Estate, Maduro, San Andrés Negro, Undercrown“In early 2009 we asked our torcedores to smoke less Liga Privada cigars because they were leaving too few to be exported. This request was met with the disappointment you would expect, but rather than being disgruntled they responded by blending their own signature Liga.

Incorporating many of the same rare tobaccos, but of different vintages and primings, the cigar they created was no mere replacement. Rather it is an exceptional smoking experience of uncompromising quality and flavor that deserves to be smoked by all.”

And the Drew Estate Undercrown is born
