La Colmena Unico Especial

01/15/2020
Ecuadorian DeFlorada, El Titan de Bronze, Kyle Gellis, La Colmena Unico Especial, Sandy Cobas, USA First time today with this limited and rare cigar

From Cigar Dojo (04.15.2015):
“La Colmena is a Cuban-inspired cigar made by Warped Cigars at the famous El Titan de Bronze factory, rolled by true category 9 rollers, all from Cuba. The idea of a no. 9 roller is that they are the best of their class and are usually tasked with rolling complex shapes to meet perfection.

La Colmena translates to “The Beehive”, and for this blend, Warped Cigars owner Kyle Gellis and El Titan de Bronze owner Sandy Cobas cleverly incorporated a twisted cap to finish each cigar – resembling a bee’s stinger. While the La Colmena cigar is a regular production release, this Unico Especial vitola is a limited cigar made available only to attendees of the 2014 IPCPR trade show.”

The 2019 release:
The original release was in 2014 and consisted of only 1,000 tins of 10 being made. In 2019 it will return with even fewer made, only 950 tins. This is a rare one from The Stash Smoke Shop in Milwaukie, Oregon.

Once lit, I determine that this is going to be a mild and nuanced cigar. The draw is perfectly delivering a generous amount of slightly sweet woody creamy smoke with a touch of spice on the retrohale that in my mind matches this elegant cigar perfectly.

At the second third black pepper coats my tongue with wood notes following along the way through an easy draw producing a razor-sharp burn and a long ash that I didn’t risk falling into my lap. The retrohale remains the same.

At the last third after an hour and a half… the flavors have ramped up providing more of the same with dominant black pepper flavors at the forefront.

This is a spendy cigar that lays down flavors that are more nuanced and mild than I prefer, but this was a very nice change-up.
